Lessons From The Classroom - Adding a SPARK Into Your Devotions

The school I teach at is currently in the second year of running the SPARK program. This means that every student starts their day with 15 minutes of physical activity before they begin classwork.

This program was first introduced to the school after I read the book SPARK by John Ratey, MD. This book dives into the science of what happens in the brain following exercise. When we get our heart rate up, our memory improves as does our concentration, all due to the release of chemicals in the brain from exercise. In the book, Dr. Ratey talks about how a “brain boost” is unlocked in the hour that follows any exercise that can get your heart rate up. As such, we specifically schedule our toughest subjects (Math, ELA, etc.) following periods of physical activity in order to best take advantage of this boost.

As a result of this initiative, we have dealt with fewer classroom behavioural issues, have had a decrease in office referrals, and we have had a noticeable improvement in academic outcomes.

What if we took advantage of this same phenomenon when we study scripture?

Sometimes I read scripture as a small devotional, and it is very straightforward and meant to lift my spirits. Occasionally though, I study scripture. I really dig deep into a passage and go out of my way to truly wrestle with it. However much as I love to do this, after a while, I will admit that I lose focus. I find myself rereading the same line time and again. Or I read a section of verses and then realize I can’t recall a single line of what I had read. It happens so reliably that I can’t help but think that it is a ploy of the enemy.

However, I know that I am fearfully and wonderfully made. We are told that God knit us together in the womb (Psalm 139). This means that He is the one who designed our brains to release a chemical that makes it easier to concentrate, retain information, and stay focused after we have exerted ourselves. So why not use this knowledge to glorify our Lord?

So my lesson for this week is this: go get active! God gave you an amazing body. So as you are able, use it! Get moving, and unlock the learning benefit that is associated with exercise. As little as 15 minutes of exercise can have an effect on your ability to stay focused as you dive into God’s word.

Why not try it for yourself this week and let me know how it goes?

Until next time.
